Adult nicotine guide
How to Choose a Pouch
The right pouch is not the strongest one. It is the lowest strength and most comfortable format that meets the needs of an adult who already uses nicotine.
Quick start
Choose in three steps
Compare the actual nicotine amount in one pouch. Do not rely on dots, colour or words such as “strong” because brand scales are not standardized.
Mini is the most discreet, slim is a balanced everyday shape, and regular formats usually feel fuller under the lip.
Flavour, cooling and moisture change how a pouch feels, but they do not tell you how much nicotine it contains.
The most important number
Strength: compare mg per pouch
Start with the lowest suitable strength
If you already use nicotine but are unsure which strength to choose, select the lowest available option and follow the label. A higher number is not a sign of better quality.
- Use mg/pouch: this is the dose contained in one pouch.
- Do not confuse mg/g with mg/pouch: mg/g describes concentration by weight and may look similar while delivering a different amount per pouch.
- Do not compare brand dots: three dots from one brand may not equal three dots from another.
- Never stack pouches: using multiple pouches at once increases nicotine exposure.
Comfort and release
Format, moisture and fit
Mini
Small and discreet. A practical choice when a regular pouch feels bulky.
Slim
Narrow and elongated. Often the easiest balance of comfort and stability.
Regular
A fuller format with more material. Choose it only if you prefer a more noticeable fit.
Dry
Usually feels less moist at first and may seem more gradual. Actual nicotine delivery varies by formulation.
Moist
Often produces flavour and sensation sooner and may create more drip. Remove it if the feeling becomes uncomfortable.
Personal preference
Choose flavour after strength
Clean and cooling. Strong cooling can make a pouch feel more intense even when the nicotine amount is unchanged.
Usually sweeter and less cooling. Check the label because flavour names do not indicate strength.
Profiles such as coffee, cola or citrus can vary widely by brand. Availability and authorization vary by jurisdiction.
Use as directed
How to use a pouch
- 1Check the label
Confirm the amount per pouch, directions, warnings and recommended maximum. Instructions differ by product.
- 2Use one pouch
Place one pouch between the gum and cheek. Do not chew it, swallow it or use multiple pouches together.
- 3Pay attention to comfort
A mild tingling sensation can occur. Remove the pouch early if irritation, burning or other discomfort develops.
- 4Remove and dispose safely
Follow the product’s timing instructions, then place the used pouch in a closed bin where children and pets cannot reach it.
Know when to stop
Signs the pouch may be too strong
Remove it immediately if you feel unwell
Too much nicotine can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, cold sweats, weakness, palpitations or chest pain.
Do not combine a pouch with cigarettes, vaping or another nicotine product unless a healthcare professional has instructed you to do so.
In Canada, call 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669). Call 911 for severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion or chest pain.
Before you choose
Your five-point check
- Is the nicotine amount shown in mg per pouch?
- Is it the lowest suitable strength for you?
- Will the pouch size feel comfortable under your lip?
- Have you read the directions, warnings and daily maximum?
- In Canada, does an authorized non-prescription product display an NPN?
